With the nights finally drawing in, it’s starting to look a lot like autumn.
For some, it’s a time of celebration after the baking heat of the summer; for others, it’s time to stock up on woolly socks in preparation for winter. But no matter how you feel about autumn, we can all agree that the changing of seasons presents a great opportunity for our homes. You’ve heard of spring cleaning, of course, but have you ever considered an autumn cleaning? Yep, it’s a real thing – and here are 4 great reasons to give it a go in 2019.
Reason #4: It’s a great time to bust those summer bugs
UK summers are famously temperamental, with some being scorchers and others being a little on the wetter side. But this combination of meteorological activity can lead to an increase in insects and bugs — especially spiders and flies. Then, when the temperature rises, we tend to open our windows — and invite these creepy-crawlies right on in! If you’ve spent summer with your windows flung wide, an autumn cleaning is a great opportunity to vanish away any remaining bugs or — sorry to say it — eggs they may have left behind. Yuck.
Reason #3: Autumn is the perfect time to revisit your rugs
If you’re a fan of the annual spring cleaning, by the time autumn rolls around it will have been around six months since your last deep clean. Regular cleaning will take care of most things, but household items such as rugs will definitely benefit from a bi-annual deep clean. Over six months rugs can collect dirt on a deeper level, meaning taking them outside and giving them a good airing on a crisp autumnal day can be just what the doctor ordered.
Reason #2: Your post-summer bins will thank you for the attention
As we mentioned above, the heat of summer can be a blessing and a curse. It’s great for sunbathing, but it’s not so great for the growth of germs and other nasties. One area you might not consider for a deep clean is your household bins. If you’ve ever had a bit sit just a bit too long over summer, you’ll know just what we mean. The heat can create a haven for lots of horrible things you don’t want in your home — and autumn is the ideal time to sanitise them all. We recommend going around your home and deep cleaning all of your bins during early autumn to ensure they’re clean as a whistle.
Reason #1: Get a head start on the inevitable deluge of dust
Just as windows being open in summer can create a bit of housework for you, sadly, the opposite is also true. Over winter it’s unlikely that your windows will spend much time in the “open” position, which means dust has nowhere to go, which means you’ll find yourself reaching for the duster much more often. If you want to make winter dusting an easier job across the board, it’s a great idea to start in autumn by eliminating the existing layer of dust you have around the home. This includes deep cleaning carpets and other upholstery. Believe us, your future self will thank you when winter rolls around!
